    Nigeria Government Launches $40 Million ICT Project Across 10 Universities

    The Nigerian government has taken a significant step towards transforming the country’s education sector with the launch of a $40 million ICT initiative across 10 federal universities. Known as the Blueprint ICT Development (Blueprint-ICT-Dev) Project, the initiative aims to drive digital transformation in these institutions, enhancing teaching, learning, research, and governance. The project is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and will be implemented in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC).

    According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the project is described as “a strategic investment in the future of Nigerian education—building smart campuses, empowering smart people, and nurturing smart ideas.”

    Project Objectives

    The Blueprint-ICT-Dev Project seeks to:

    • Strengthen Institutional ICT Infrastructure: Equip universities with modern ICT tools to support digital learning and research.
    • Enable Hybrid and Cross-Border Learning: Foster collaboration with international institutions via digital platforms.
    • Improve Education Data Systems: Enhance data management to support evidence-based policymaking.
    • Promote Technical and Vocational Education: Develop digital and vocational skills through tech-driven tools and platforms.

    Selected Universities

    The 10 federal universities participating in the project are:

    1. University of Calabar (South-South)
    2. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (South-East)
    3. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (South-East)
    4. University of Ibadan (South-West)
    5. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (South-West)
    6. Federal University of Technology, Minna (North-Central)
    7. University of Jos (North-Central)
    8. University of Maiduguri (North-East)
    9. Modibbo Adama University, Yola (North-East)
    10. Bayero University, Kano (North-West)

    Expected Outcomes

    The initiative is expected to:

    • Improve Teaching and Learning through digital platforms and tools.
    • Expand Access to Education, especially in underserved communities.
    • Enhance Research Capacity by enabling faculty and students to participate more actively in the global knowledge economy.

    Funding and Oversight

    The $40 million funding from AFD will be administered by the NUC, with the selected universities acting as Centres of Excellence in ICT adoption and educational innovation.

    Stakeholder Reactions

    Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the project is “not just a technological upgrade,” but a transformational step toward “building smart campuses, empowering smart people, and nurturing smart ideas.”

    NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, added that the project aims to redefine the role of ICT in higher education, moving beyond infrastructure to innovation and reform.

    This landmark initiative positions Nigeria to modernize its education sector significantly. By embracing digital transformation, the project promises to boost educational access, quality, and innovation—helping prepare a digitally literate and competitive workforce for the future.
