The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has taken a significant step towards fortifying the data protection sector with the unveiling of the Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (NDP-SRAP 2023-2027). The launch, which took place in Abuja, coincided with a capacity-building workshop on Data Privacy and Protection for Data Protection Officers.
This strategic roadmap, encapsulated in the five-pillar NDP-SRAP, aims to create approximately 500,000 jobs and generate over N125 billion in revenue. The pillars include governance, ecosystem and technology, human capital development, cooperation and collaboration, as well as funding and sustainability.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, NDPC’s National Commissioner, emphasized the significance of the NDP-SRAP and the accompanying training in fulfilling the commission’s mandate of establishing a robust data protection sector. He underscored that the data protection sector alone holds the potential to create more than half a million jobs.
“The NDP-SRAP comprises interlinked initiatives and activities like job and wealth creation, human capital development, revenue generation, foundational initiatives for the digital economy, and enhancing Nigeria’s global reputation,” said Olatunji. “These activities are expected to create about 500,000 jobs, generate revenue of more than N125 billion, and expand the sector within the lifespan of this roadmap.”
He further highlighted the broad scope of job opportunities within the data protection sector, encompassing various professions. With over 69 activities embedded in the five pillars, the NDP-SRAP aims to engage public institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations, and the media to ensure effective implementation.
Addressing the need for certification in the sector, Olatunji mentioned the commission’s consideration of endorsing a Data Protection and Certification body. He expressed concern that certified professionals in Nigeria often had to obtain foreign certifications, which could be costly. The commission aims to develop home-grown solutions and certifications that align with global standards.
The preparation of the roadmap spanned a year and aligns with the “Renewed Hope” agenda mandates and blueprints of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy.
Mr. Ivan Anya, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Licensed Data Protection Compliance Organizations (LDPCOs), emphasized ongoing engagements to ensure the effective implementation of the roadmap. He noted the existence of around 150 LDPCOs, with expectations of more registrations to further develop the country’s data protection ecosystem.
As the NDP-SRAP is recognized as a dynamic working document, increased activities and collaborations are anticipated, fostering a robust and resilient data protection sector in Nigeria.
