Nigerians might have to contend with another internet disruption as the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) gears up for an indefinite strike starting April 4, 2024.
The union, representing senior staff in the telecom sector, accuses subcontractors linked to Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited of unfair labor practices. These subcontractors include Reime Group, Allstream Streamenergy Solutions Limited, Uppercrest Limited, Tyllium Nigeria Limited, and Specific Tools and Techniques Limited.
PTECSSAN alleges that these companies subject their workers to grueling conditions, including:
- Unreasonable work hours: Workers claim they are forced to work without set schedules and into the night.
- Lack of proper security: The union expresses concern for worker safety due to the absence of adequate security measures during late-night field work.
- Unfair treatment: PTECSSAN accuses the companies of failing to provide workers with proper compensation and benefits commensurate with their efforts.
Failed Negotiations Spark Strike Threat
According to PTECSSAN, attempts to address these issues through the Ministry of Labour and Employment proved futile. The union claims the subcontractor companies refused to participate in mediation meetings.
The indefinite strike, if it goes ahead, could disrupt data and call services across Nigeria. This comes on the heels of internet disruptions experienced in March 2024 due to damaged subsea cables, causing significant economic losses.
PTECSSAN’s Demands
The union outlines several key demands for ending the standoff:
- Recognition of worker rights: PTECSSAN insists on the right of its members to freely associate with the union.
- Negotiation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA): The union seeks a formal agreement that outlines fair working conditions and benefits for its members.
- Improved worker treatment: PTECSSAN demands better pay, proper working hours, and adequate security measures for its members.
Looking Ahead: Uncertain Resolution
The success of the strike in disrupting services and the eventual resolution of the conflict remain to be seen. Nigerians nationwide await developments as PTECSSAN and the telecom subcontractors navigate this tense situation.
