New Spotify Smart Filters Let You Sort Your Library by Mood and Genre

Music streaming giant Spotify is once again redefining personalization with the rollout of a new feature called Spotify Smart Filters. The filters allow Premium users to organize their libraries by mood, genre, or activity, giving them greater control over what they listen to.

With this update, Spotify is making it faster and easier to find the perfect soundtrack for any moment—whether it’s winding down after work, powering through a workout, or setting the mood for a romantic evening.

The feature is rolling out first to Premium users on mobile devices and tablets in select markets, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa. A wider release is expected in the coming weeks to ensure more listeners worldwide can access this enhanced personalization tool. Activating Smart Filters is simple: tap the filter icon at the top of your library, choose from options arranged by mood, activity, or genre, and watch your saved content instantly adjust to match the vibe.

What sets Spotify Smart Filters apart is how deeply they integrate into the listening experience. Beyond music, users can filter playlists, podcasts, and even audiobooks. The feature also connects directly with Spotify’s AI DJ, allowing listeners to launch fresh, personalized sessions tailored to their tastes. By blending real-time customization with artificial intelligence, Spotify continues to expand how users discover and enjoy content.

This launch is part of a larger strategy. Over the past few months, Spotify has steadily introduced tools designed to boost personalization and give users more creative freedom. In April, the platform rolled out AI prompts to help users build unique playlists. Shortly after, it added the ability to design custom cover art, along with improved playlist management tools. Spotify has also upgraded its AI DJ with voice control features and enhanced its iconic Discover Weekly playlist with more personalization options. Together, these updates highlight Spotify’s ongoing commitment to innovation and individuality in an increasingly competitive streaming market.

Still, there are trade-offs. Some users have criticized the app’s growing sense of clutter. With Smart Filters, interactive AI tools, in-app chats, podcast comments, and even Stories, Spotify sometimes feels more like a social platform than a streamlined music player. While not everyone is happy with this direction, the company’s growth suggests otherwise. According to Spotify’s latest quarterly report, the platform now has 696 million users worldwide—an 11% increase compared to the same period last year.

Despite the criticisms, the appeal of Smart Filters lies in their ability to simplify listening in an age when libraries are overflowing with content. By offering a quick way to sort music, podcasts, and audiobooks based on mood or genre, Spotify is helping to solve the problem of choice overload. For Premium subscribers, this means less time scrolling and more time enjoying content that fits the moment. And for Spotify, it cements its reputation as a leader in streaming innovation—constantly finding new ways to connect people with the right audio at the right time.
