Microsoft has announced a new update for Windows 11, and now users can easily switch their default browser. If you have Windows 11 installed, you can now change your default browser with a single click thanks to a new KB5011563 build.
In a press release, the software company said, “In previous builds of Windows 11, you had to jump through several hoops to completely change your default browser. The operating system required users to individually set a default browser for every type of file and link. In our guide on how to set the default web browser on Windows 11, one step involves repeating a process up to nine times. After updating to the latest build of Windows 11, it’s much easier to switch your default browser”. The new one-click technique is now available to all Windows 11 users after a successful trial period in December.
It wasn’t until Windows 11 was released that a simple button to switch default browsers was added. A checkbox that appears only when you visited a link outside of a browser had to be ticked by Windows 11 users in order to modify file extensions and protocol handlers for HTTP, HTTPS,.HTM, and.HTML. However, Mozilla, Brave, and even Chrome’s CEO of Chrome blasted Microsoft’s move to make it more difficult to switch browsers.
Now that Windows 11 has received a major upgrade, you can now search for your preferred browser under the “Default Apps” section and then select to make it your default browser. Changing file handlers may now be done in a single click, making this a huge upgrade over what was previously possible.
You can receive the update by searching for optional updates through the Settings app on Windows 11. Alternatively, you can grab the latest build through the Microsoft Update Catalog.
It’s evident that Microsoft has taken into account the feedback and criticism it has received on the changes it made in Windows 11. Windows 11 continues to be improved on a regular basis by the software company, whether it’s with small tweaks like this or more substantial ones like Android apps or enhancements to the taskbar. On April 5th, Microsoft plans to unveil a slew of new features for Windows 11 that are specifically designed for hybrid work.
