Studies show that around 60 percent of adults suffer from chronic sleep problems, which have a negative impact on their health, mental well-being, productivity, and more. Throughout medical history, the most successful therapies for insomnia have been restricted to being offered exclusively at in-person sleep clinics.
In addition, recent studies have shown that sleeping pills, the majority of which have negative and even highly dangerous side effects, do not help sleep-deprived victims. BMJ Open revealed that while millions of adults use sleep aids to manage insomnia, they aren’t a long-term solution. Aside from preventing REM sleep, sleeping pills also impair memory recall, increase the risk of death from all causes, and have even been linked to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
After experiencing what many other insomnia suffers encounter— months-long waitlists and a general dearth of sleep clinics outside of major metropolitan areas— and witnessing the demand from Simple Habit customers, Founder and CEO Yunha Kim went ahead to develop Sleep Reset to make it easier for people with insomnia to get the treatments they need.
The Sleep Reset app is focused on bringing the same treatment that patients receive in sleep clinics — such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) — to their smartphones.
Why a new app – “Sleep Reset”?
According to Kim, the Founder of the app, the idea of building “the world’s first digital, personalized sleep clinic” came to her during the pandemic when, like many others, she began experiencing sleep issues. “I was thinking of different solutions to help me sleep better during the pandemic. Sleeping pills didn’t help, and sleep clinics had waiting lists for up to six months,” she said.
Plus, data from Simple Habit — a Meditation App she created in 2017, and has more than 5 million users — helped Kim developed the idea. While only 10% of content on that app was related to sleep, it saw more than 70% engagement. So she decided to build a standalone sleep-oriented solution.
Sleep Reset’s no-pills program was made in collaboration with sleep experts from top sleep clinics and universities, such as the University of Arizona, the University of Minnesota, and the Stanford University Sleep Medicine Center. The company says its mission is to provide a life-long, sustainable solution to sleep better after just 12 weeks, with no pills or melatonin needed – which means no grogginess, side effects, or dependency.
While in beta for the past sixteen months, Sleep Reset has already helped thousands of people improve their sleep. One survey of members who completed the program found that nine in 10 reported improved sleep with no grogginess or side effects. According to data from their Sleep Logs, Sleep Reset beta users reported, on average:
- 88 minutes increase in total sleep time per night
- 52 percent less time needed to fall asleep
- 48 percent less time spent awake in the middle of the night
- three fewer nighttime awakenings per night
How to use the app
- After downloading the app, you’ll need to first of all take a detailed assessment to uncover the root causes of your sleep issues and/or sleep anxiety.
- Then, you are matched with a personal sleep coach who builds your customized 12-week program and provides guidance and support.
- Lastly, the Sleep Reset program helps you improve your sleep with clinically-proven techniques from top sleep clinics, including many based on CBT-I.
Sleep Reset is available for download on iOS and Android. For the first three months, the app is available for free, but after that, you’ll be required to pay $75 every month. If you’d like to continue the program after the initial three-month period, it costs $75 each month.
This is more expensive than many sleep-related apps for phones, but it’s cheaper than going to a sleep clinic to try to get the same results.
