Just late last year, Netflix announced that it was giving up launching in China due to regulatory issues.
Now the streaming giant has announced that it will be seeking an alternative way by entering into a licensing deal with Baidu’s video service, iQiyi. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the annual APOS conference in Indonesia, by the streaming service’s VP of content acquisition, Robert Roy.
Though it said that this deal will not grant them unfettered broadcasting access, it allows them to continue distributing content into the country. According to a Netflix vice president in a talk with The Hollywood Reporter, “this will grow awareness of the streaming service’s unique content and brand.”
According to Bloomberg, “The licensing deal covers television dramas, animated series, documentaries and variety shows, iQiyi said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.”
