This incident goes to show that you cannot afford to neglect the role of social media in governance. Even though Governor Oshiomole of Edo State, in Nigeria, was trying to eradicate indiscipline by enforcing the laws of the land, he was caught on camera using unsuitable words while dealing with a widow trader. When the woman begging told the Governor, that she was a widow, he said that She should “go and die”
Unfortunately for him, it got onto social media and went viral. Of course, what followed was a barrage of insults, complaints and unprintable comments about his behaviour.
For those who do not know what happened, see the video below.
On the 29th of November, Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state apologized for the comments he made to a widow in Benin during an inspection tour on Mission Road, in the state capital, a fortnight ago.
The governor’s apology was made when the leadership of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), paid him a courtesy visit in Benin.
