Neck collar device in development to solve sleep interruptions

A new collar is being developed to provide alternative Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) with a more comfortable and non-claustrophobic treatment. Globally, around one billion adults within the age of 30 to 69 years are estimated to have obstructive sleep aponea (OSA). A digital health company, Somne focused on finding a solution to sleep apnoea comfortably, announced it is developing a revolutionary non-invasive method.

CEO of Somne, Volha Hrechka, said: “Somne is launching with the desire to have equal focus on patients’ adherence, comfort, and efficacy. We are making use of variable negative pressure technology to develop the medical device that will allow reduction of the discomfort that has plagues mass adoption of other sub-optimal products. The first of its kind Class II medical device will be an alternative to CPAP machines and other treatments, with a more convenient fit.”

Dr. Jerry Kram, a sleep expert, medical advisor, and physician, at Somne said: “There are a lot of people who do not use CPAP but prescribe it for treatment. If OSA is left untreated, it can contribute to other serious health complications such as heart problems, Type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, and high blood pressure. Somne’s device can bring about a huge change, an innovative approach for OSA management for sleep apnoea patients globally. A non-intrusive device with a comfortable fit will make treatment easier for patients. “

Somne’s device for sleep apnoea treatment is worn around the neck and uses patented Variable Negative Pressure (vNEP) technology to provide therapy to patients while they sleep. The collar prototype provides gentle suction to prevent the weight of the person’s soft tissue from resting on their airway as they sleep; this keeps the patient’s airway open, assisting them to breathe normally and sleep comfortably.

Recent findings from an IRB-approved human trial of Somne’s prototype device show high efficacy and patient comfort. Somne continues to work on product development while starting the FDA IDE Application. The company intends to bring its product to market as soon as 2024.
