NASA is making significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with its development of a ChatGPT-style interface, akin to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which could transform communication between astronauts and spacecraft.

Engineers at a prestigious space agency are developing an advanced system to facilitate natural communication between astronauts and their spacecraft, while mission controllers would have the ability to interact with AI-powered robots located on distant planets and moons.

According to a report in The Guardian, NASA’s proposed ChatGPT-like interface will incorporate a natural language interface, allowing astronauts and mission control to seek advice and guidance from the AI. Rather than relying on cumbersome technical manuals, astronauts could simply ask the AI for assistance with complex space experiments or maneuvering tasks.

The initial deployment of this AI technology is planned for the Lunar Gateway, a forthcoming extraterrestrial space station forming a crucial part of NASA’s Artemis program. Engineers spearheading the project are confident that this innovative interface will enhance the capabilities of astronauts stationed on the Lunar Gateway, allowing them to communicate effortlessly with AI systems and benefit from real-time advice and instructions.

The Lunar Gateway is a pioneering spacecraft designed with various capabilities, including a power and propulsion system, a crew habitat, docking capabilities, an airlock, and logistics modules. It will serve as a crucial platform for crewed and uncrewed experiments, testing technologies and operational procedures for long-duration space missions, such as future missions to Mars.

NASA recognises the importance of AI and machine learning technologies in managing the Lunar Gateway, even during periods when it is unoccupied. These technologies will support autonomous operations of scientific payloads, prioritise data transmission, facilitate health management of the Gateway, and enable various other autonomous functions. The integration of AI will ensure efficient and effective operations of the space station, paving the way for future deep space missions.
