Nana Ekow Taylor has emerged overall winner of this year’s Apps Challenge Awards organised by Ghana’s major telecoms company MTN with the BuzzTrick app.
This is the second edition of the annual event and Taylor received GHC20,000 for the feat, while winners in each of the three categories of the competition received fifteen thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC15, 000.00 as their prizes.
In a statement made available to Innovation Village, MTN said the MTN Apps Challenge for 2014 officially began on October 1, 2014 and ended on November 28, 2014.
The competition, which attracted 100 Apps, mainly from developers from the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Central Regions, was geared towards the search for mobile applications with a focus on education, games and entertainment, and lifestyle.
All the apps received were scrutinized by our distinguished experts drawn from the telecoms industry and the academia, and the entries assessed based on innovation, functionality and commercial viability.
The apps were shortlisted to the top 20 and then the final winners were selected.
In the Education category, Lovell Larbie, emerged as the Gold Winner, Richard Duodo as the Silver Winner and Adu Kwabena, and Jesse Cofie as Bronze Winners.
In the Games & Entertainment category, Isaac Onwukwe and Wilfred Attipoe emerged as Gold Winners, while Nana Ghartey and Delali Vorgbe emerged as Silver and Bronze Winners, respectively.
Lifestyle, the third category of the competition, saw Nana Ekow Taylor, Elvis Agah and Henk Oppong emerging as Gold Winners while Stefan Froelich came second to win silver and Christian Pels and Kofi Akuoko coming third to win Bronze.
In an address delivered on his behalf at the Awards ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, Mr Serama Taukobong, said as a brand with a vision to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world to its customers, and as the leading mobile communications company in Ghana, MTN had a responsibility to ensure that Ghana played a significant role in the apps industry.
Mr Taukobong said MTN recognized the importance of using technology as a tool to promote human development, hence the initiation of the project ‘Promoting Innovative Local Applications Development’.
