Namibia will be investing approximately $5.9 million (N$110 million) over the next three years in a project to set up telecom towers around the country. This move was made public by the Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Emma Theofelus, who stated that 30 network towers will be installed within this time frame.
This initiative was first announced by Namibia’s telecom infrastructure company, PowerCom, last year. It stated the country will need close to 300 network towers in the next three to five years. Speaking at the 23rd ICT stakeholders’ meeting, Ms. Theofelus mentioned this project aims to reduce the digital divide in areas that currently have limited or no access to network connectivity.
Stakeholders and representatives, including those from the Namibia Standards Institute and the National Radiation Protection Authority, were updated on the progress and plans of the government. The meeting held in Windhoek, was a forum for discussion and updates between government officials and those in the ICT sector.
Shoki Kandjimi, the senior public relations officer at the Ministry, emphasized the government’s commitment towards creating a conducive environment in the ICT sector. More than 50 delegates from different branches under the ICT umbrella attended this event, forging a platform for communication between the government and critical stakeholders in this sector.
