The 6th edition of Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) Ghana’s annual Internet Festival (iFest), a month-long festival dedicated to data education, awareness creation and the promotion of the inherent benefits of broadband data access, has been launched in Accra, Ghana’s capital city.

Also dubbed the 20th anniversary edition, this year’s iFest, which is being organized with support from MTN Ghana’s digital partners–Huawei, Tecno, Jumia, Microsoft, Samsung and Infinix–forms part of activities marking the 20th anniversary celebrations of MTN Ghana.

Among activities planned for the celebration are mobile device fairs, data clinics market storms and engagement with trade unions.

The theme for this year’s iFest is ‘Faster Connectivity, Smarter Business’.

Addressing participants at the launch of iFest 2016 on Wednesday, Mr Asher Khan, Marketing Officer, MTN Ghana, stressed the need to create awareness about the benefits of the internet on MTN’s network as well as on the internet as a whole.

Mr Khan said MTN currently led the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) data market with a 49.25 per cent market share and with over nine million subscribers as at April 2016, citing data from the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Data from NCA, Mr Khan said, also showed that data penetration and ICT development in the telecoms sector has also led to a two per cent growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
