MTN Uganda Expands MoMo to Boost Financial Inclusion

By Jessica Adiele on July 14, 2025 Financial Inclusion, Payments

MTN Uganda is broadening the scope of its mobile money platform, MoMo, with the goal of driving greater financial inclusion and unlocking new economic opportunities for individuals and businesses across the country. MoMo’s expansion is a continuation of the telecom giant in-house efforts to transform it from merely an online money transfer service to essentially embracing digital financial ecosystem.

This move is necessary and timely. With the growing digital economy in Uganda, there is a need for more flexible, accessible, and user-friendly financial tools. Despite its impact, MoMo needs to shift its growth direction beyond transactions and focus on fulfilling more substantial financial demands.

    What’s Changing?

The MoMo website is being updated by MTN Uganda, offering customers savings, loans, insurance, and merchant services. A partnership with financial institutions and fintech startups is collaborating to ensure compliance, accessibility and ease of use.

Without the need to visit a bank, users can save money on their mobile wallets and apply for microloans or access low-cost insurance products. On the flip side, merchants will profit from digital payment tools that facilitate the collection and management of funds.

The MTN Group’s Ambition 2025 initiative is aimed at positioning the company as one of the major players in Africa’a digital transformation journey, not just telecoms; but across fintech, digital services, and e-commerce.

    A Tool for Inclusion

The financial landscape of Uganda is already being transformed by MoMo. More than 70% of adults are now using mobile money services, as reported by the Bank. MoMo is a crucial financial instrument for many, not just its convenience.

If the system adds savings and credit, it could solve long-standing issues of low access to money or funds, particularly among unbanked individuals, and enabling informal business financing. Women, youth, and micro-entrepreneurs are confronted with tangible barriers to economic growth.

Success hinges on the successful execution of the plan. One thing is for the sake of it being a responsibly, transparently and affordably digital loans.

    Progress with Caution

MTN Uganda’s decision is bold, and arguably overdue. Instead of being just a wallet, MoMo is now promoting digital financial health. That’s really exciting, especially as traditional banking in the country still weeds out most of the population.

Nevertheless, there is a cautionary tale to follow. The proliferation of mobile-based microloans in Kenya and other regions resulted in negative outcomes, including over-indebtedness and concerns about data privacy. If MTN and its partners don’t implement stringent consumer protections and financial education programs, the expansion may not be beneficial for consumers.

Financial inclusion shouldn’t mean easy access to credit at any cost. Access to tools that are unbiased and can truly enhance people’s financial stability should be granted.

    The Bigger Picture

MTN Uganda’s MoMo expansion highlights the trend in Africa where telecom firms are transforming into fintech companies, which has helped to bridge gaps that traditional institutions have been unable to close. Its ability to reach out to rural users, leverage data, and offer real-time financial services make it a strong contender for leading this change.

The MoMo expansion of MTN Uganda represents a robust approach to inclusive digital finance. It has the potential to improve livelihoods, encourage small businesses, and stimulate national economic participation. Trust, transparency, and user empowerment are essential components of this next chapter, not just growth metrics.

Because financial innovation only matters if it actually works for the people it’s meant to serve.
