MTN South Africa has officially launched a comprehensive suite of integrated home and mobile connectivity offerings, marking a significant evolution from its previous “Ambition 2025” strategy. This new direction places a strong emphasis on the connected home, aligning with MTN Group’s broader strategic pivot announced by CEO Ralph Mupita during a media briefing held in Johannesburg last month.
Mupita outlined that MTN’s connected home strategy will be driven by the expansion of both 5G fixed-wireless access (FWA) and fibre infrastructure. To support this initiative, MTN Group plans to acquire additional spectrum across key markets, including South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana. This investment is expected to be a key differentiator for MTN, unlocking new avenues for growth and profitability.
“The opportunity in the home is enormous,” Mupita stated. “We haven’t fully tapped into this space yet. With the right spectral assets, we will aggressively pursue it using FWA, and in certain cases, fibre-to-the-home (FTTH). This investment will set MTN apart and will be central to future growth and profit pools.”
As part of this strategic shift, MTN South Africa introduced its new MTN Sky Premium plans, described as a “lifestyle proposition” aimed at delivering seamless connectivity to households across the country.
According to Bertus van der Vyver, General Manager for Postpaid and Home Solutions at MTN South Africa:
Connecting the home is a cornerstone of MTN’s long-term growth strategy. MTN Sky Premium is the next evolution of that vision, integrating mobile and home connectivity to deliver seamless experiences that keep families connected, productive, and entertained.
Key Features of MTN Sky Premium
The MTN Sky Premium portfolio consists of five distinct plans, each offering a combination of mobile data, all-network voice minutes, home connectivity discounts, and premium customer service benefits. The home connectivity component includes monthly savings on MTN’s 5G, LTE fixed-wireless, or fibre services—ranging from R50 on the entry-level plan to R800 on the top-tier offering.
Premium customer service features vary by plan and include benefits such as priority access to call centers and dedicated relationship managers. Data allocations across the plans span from 15GB to 200GB per month, catering to a wide range of household needs.
Existing MTN postpaid customers are eligible to switch or upgrade to the new Sky Premium plans. Additionally, customers already subscribed to MTN Home Internet or MTN Fibre services can enjoy savings of up to R800/month when they opt into the Sky Premium offering.
Strategic Outlook to 2030
The connected home forms one of three strategic pillars in MTN’s roadmap to 2030. The other two pillars include fintech and digital infrastructure. MTN’s fintech ambitions are centered around its MoMo app, which is set to receive expanded features and services as the company transitions users away from traditional USSD platforms.
On the digital infrastructure front, MTN is investing in the development of AI and edge data centers across its markets. “We’re exploring how to participate in the data center space,” Mupita said. “AI is a transformational technology with the potential to rapidly enhance productivity. It will be pervasive and central to our infrastructure strategy.”
