MTN is organising a hackathon specifically for skilled tech developers and innovators in the fintech space, especially those with expertise in mobile money. The telecom giant is inviting these talented individuals to take part in the MTN MoMo API Hackathon, which aims to generate solutions that will shape the future of demand-driven financial services. Participants have the chance to win $10,000 during this event, all while making a significant impact on South Africa’s financial services and mobile money industry.
Scheduled to run from July 31 to October 9, 2023, this 10-week hackathon spans 15 countries, each offering its own $10,000 prize pool. MTN’s main goal is to encourage developers to create solutions that boost financial inclusion and literacy within their respective markets.
Through the Open API Platform, developers participating in the hackathon will compete to design and develop a solution that goes beyond processing payments and incorporating additional features and functionalities that promote financial inclusion and literacy in their registered markets.
Unlike last year’s edition, this competition involves the top 12 tech developers from South Africa competing for a $10,000 grand prize. The MTN MoMo hackathon is currently ongoing and will continue until October 8, 2023. Interested developers are encouraged to apply here.
In an interview with Chief Financial Services Officer (Fintech) Bradwin Roper, TechCentral learned that MTN financial services is considering exposing the MoMo application programming interface (API) to developers as part of a future update to the MoMo platform.
Harvesting different solutions from developers may be a good way for MTN to better understand the nuances of the various markets they operate in and find solutions to problems they did not know exist in the mobile money space.

Roper also mentioned to Tech Financials that the introduction and adoption of new solutions will contribute to MTN’s goal of creating a pan-African Fintech platform. This platform aims to empower millions of previously underserved Africans by giving them control over their financial futures.
