MTN Nigeria Explores AI Technology to Combat Cable Vandalism

    0
By Toluwanimi Adejumo on July 31, 2025 Telecoms

MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecom operator, is considering deploying artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor and protect its fibre optic cables nationwide. This move follows a surge in telecom infrastructure vandalism, with over 13,000 cable cuts recorded in 18 months. Developed in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, the AI system will detect vibrations, identify the cause, and alert personnel for prompt on-site response.

    Alarming Cable Vandalism Trend

MTN’s Chief Technical Officer, Yahaya Ibrahim, revealed that the company experienced 13,700 fibre cuts in 18 months, including 4,700 incidents in the first half of 2025. Each incident causes significant service disruptions, averaging 15 hours of downtime monthly. Most cases result from vandalism and road construction, which account for 69% of total cable damage.

    Economic and Consumer Impact

These incidents disrupt connectivity and inflict huge financial losses, estimated in billions of Naira annually, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Funds spent on repairs could have expanded network coverage in underserved regions.

    Government and Industry Response

To curb vandalism, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a 2024 order designating telecom assets as critical national information infrastructure (CNI), with culprits facing up to 10 years in prison. A government task force is also implementing stronger security and real-time monitoring measures.

    Benefits of AI Adoption

AI-powered vibration sensors will allow MTN to:

    • Reduce Downtime: Enable quicker response to fibre cuts.
    • Prevent Losses: Detect threats early to mitigate financial damage.
    • Improve Network Reliability: Maintain consistent service for customers.

    Industry-Wide Concern

Cable vandalism affects all major operators, including Airtel. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has called for collective action to protect critical infrastructure.

    Conclusion

By adopting AI, MTN Nigeria aims to strengthen infrastructure security, reduce financial losses, and enhance network reliability—supporting a more stable digital ecosystem for consumers and the economy.
