MTN Nigeria apologizes for 200% Data Price hike

MTN Nigeria has apologized to its customers following widespread backlash over a sudden 200% increase in the price of its 15GB data bundle.

The company initially raised the cost of the 15GB weekly plan from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000 as part of a broader tariff adjustment. However, after facing significant public outcry, MTN issued a statement acknowledging the abrupt nature of the change and expressing regret for the inconvenience caused.

    MTN Acknowledges Customer Frustration

As Nigeria’s largest telecommunications operator, MTN admitted that the price adjustment was unexpected and recognized customer dissatisfaction. The company stated that it understood how frustrating it must have been for subscribers to wake up to such a significant price hike.

In a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, MTN Nigeria acknowledged that the price increase was “not well-received” by its customers. The company explained that rising operational costs, taxes, and regulatory fees contributed to the adjustment.

    MTN Nigeria wrote:

“To our 15GB digital bundle lovers, You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to wake up to a 200% increase on your favorite digital bundle.”
“We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story.”
“We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”

The company also appealed to customers, asking for their understanding:

“In this season of love, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die, and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship. Thank you for your understanding.”

    Public Outcry and Regulatory Concerns

The 200% data price hike, which took effect on February 13, 2025, caused widespread frustration among subscribers, with many taking to social media to voice their disappointment.

MTN’s price adjustments followed approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for telecommunications firms to raise tariffs, marking the first official review since 2013. However, the company proceeded with the hike despite a directive from the House of Representatives instructing the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to suspend the 50% tariff increase approval.

MTN’s Commitment to Reviewing Pricing Strategy

As Nigeria’s largest telecommunications operator, MTN holds a significant market share and plays a crucial role in promoting affordable and accessible telecommunications services. The company’s apology and commitment to reviewing its pricing strategy have been welcomed by many, but customers and stakeholders expect real action to ensure fair pricing.

In conclusion, while MTN Nigeria’s apology is a positive step, the company must follow through on its commitments, engage with customers, and ensure that its services remain affordable and accessible to all Nigerians.
