MTN Mobile Money Zambia has launched a new international remittance service that allows customers to send money directly from their MoMo wallets to bank accounts in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
With the rollout, MTN MoMo becomes the first mobile money provider in Zambia to offer direct wallet-to-bank international transfers to these regions. The company says the service is also the most affordable international money transfer option currently available in the Zambian market, with transaction fees starting from as low as K5.
The new remittance feature is designed to reduce the high costs and complexity often associated with cross-border payments. Customers can transfer funds quickly and securely using globally recognised banking identifiers such as IBAN, SWIFT codes, Sort Codes, and Routing Numbers, ensuring compatibility with international banking systems.
According to MTN Mobile Money Zambia, the service enables users to send funds seamlessly for personal support, business payments, education expenses, and other international financial needs, while maintaining compliance with regulatory and security requirements.
Commenting on the launch, MTN Mobile Money Zambia Chief Executive Officer Komba Malukutila said the initiative responds directly to customer demand for more accessible and affordable global payment solutions.
He noted that the company aims to simplify international money transfers while expanding financial inclusion and strengthening Zambia’s participation in the global digital economy.
The launch aligns with MTN Group’s broader strategy to enhance cross-border payment capabilities across its African mobile money platforms. As remittances continue to play a critical role in African economies, low-cost digital transfer services are increasingly viewed as essential infrastructure for households, SMEs, and informal businesses.
By lowering transaction costs and enabling direct wallet-to-bank transfers, MTN MoMo’s new service is expected to improve access to international financial networks and support both individual users and small businesses engaged in cross-border commerce.
