MTN South Africa has introduced its eSIM solution for prepaid customers, expanding the convenience of embedded SIM support to this group of users. This development comes ahead of the potential iPhone 15 launch, where Apple is reportedly planning the phasing out of physical SIM card support in its smartphones.
Similar to post-paid customers, prepaid customers can now acquire and activate an eSIM by visiting an MTN store. The eSIM, a software-based replacement for traditional physical SIM cards, is now accessible to all MTN customers.
Originally introduced in 2019 exclusively for post-paid clients, MTN’s eSIM offers features such as the ability to use multiple eSIMs on one device and global roaming, facilitating network access while abroad without the need for a physical SIM card.
eSIM represents the next phase in SIM card evolution, providing enhanced freedom and flexibility. Unlike physical SIM cards, eSIMs are integrated directly into smartphones, devices, or wearables, eliminating the need for physical insertion. Activation occurs through your account profile, enabling seamless access to standard services.

Airtel, a key competitor, that claims to be always at the forefront in championing technological advancement, introduced the eSIM early this year. This made it the third telecom company in Nigeria to do so, following MTN and 9mobile. Furthermore, the Telecommunication company recently launched 5G services. Femi Oshinlaja, the Chief Commercial Officer, mentioned that these services will initially cover major cities such as Abuja, Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers.
