MTN Cameroon has entered into a strategic partnership with Yango, the ride-hailing platform powered by Russian tech giant Yandex, to introduce a dedicated SIM card package tailored specifically for Yango drivers. The initiative aims to enhance digital access, reduce operational costs, and improve service delivery for thousands of drivers across Cameroon.
The agreement was formalized in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, and marks a significant step in supporting the country’s growing digital mobility sector.
Introducing the “Special Yango Offer”
The new offering, branded as the “Special Yango Offer,” is designed to meet the unique needs of ride-hailing drivers by bundling affordable communication, seamless app connectivity, and financial incentives into one monthly package.
For a monthly fee of 6,000 CFA francs (approximately $10.50), drivers will receive:
- 50,000 CFA francs (around $89.50) in call credit usable across all networks
- Unlimited access to the Yango Pro app, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity
- Zero withdrawal fees for mobile money transactions
- No additional charges for customers paying via MoMoPay
The package is already being rolled out in Douala, Yaoundé, and Bafoussam, with plans to expand nationwide as Yango scales its operations across Cameroon.
Driving Digital Inclusion and Economic Empowerment
According to Clovis Pilla, Country Manager of Yango Cameroon, the partnership reflects a shared vision to build a more inclusive and digitally connected ride-hailing ecosystem.
This offer enables drivers to remain reliably connected, improve their earnings, and streamline service delivery. It’s about unlocking growth with every trip.
He emphasized that by addressing key challenges such as high data costs and limited financial access, the initiative will help strengthen the livelihoods of drivers who play a vital role in Cameroon’s urban mobility landscape.
Franck Gérard Kom, General Manager of MTN Business Cameroon, echoed this sentiment:
This collaboration ensures drivers can move people, manage their business, and stay ahead — all with greater ease and lower costs.
A Growing Regional Model
This isn’t the first time Yango and MTN have joined forces. In 2023, a similar partnership was successfully launched in Côte d’Ivoire, where the two companies introduced comparable digital packages to support ride-hailing drivers in that market. The success of that initiative laid the groundwork for the Cameroonian rollout.
As Yango continues to expand its footprint in Africa, partnerships like this one with MTN are expected to play a pivotal role in digitally empowering gig economy workers, improving service standards, and fostering inclusive economic growth.
