MTN South Africa is partnering with Meta to provide zero-rated access to Facebook, the popular social media network. The collaboration, announced today, enables MTN subscribers to enjoy up to 15MB of data per day for accessing text and photo content on Facebook without incurring any data charges. This strategic partnership aims to enhance digital inclusion while addressing the data affordability concerns of South African users.
The groundwork for this initiative was laid back in 2017 when MTN and Meta introduced Facebook AutoFlex, which allowed users to access a text-only version of the platform. Building upon that success, the new offering takes the experience a step further, enabling subscribers to view images, update their status, and send messages while using the provided data allocation.
By collaborating on an “ecosystem of services” on Facebook, MTN and Meta have developed a seamless user experience. This ecosystem facilitates various operations such as bundle purchases, data advances (XtraTime), customer registrations, and recharges using different payment methods, including cards, airtime, and mobile money. These integrated services ensure that customers can continue browsing and enjoy uninterrupted service delivery.
MTN’s Consumer Prepaid General Manager, Seun Soladoye, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Meta, highlighting the opportunity to open up the digital world to more South Africans. Soladoye further stated that this initiative is particularly crucial given the current landscape in South Africa.
Meta’s Middle East and African Director for Partnerships, Vikas Menon, commended MTN on the launch of this service, emphasising Meta’s commitment to increasing online accessibility. The partnership serves as a testament to Meta’s dedication to bringing more people online and underscores the importance of industry collaborations in driving digital inclusion.
