MTN Group has expanded its partnership with Mastercard to introduce new digital payment options and enhanced security features on its MoMo fintech platform in South Africa — a move that underscores both companies’ shared commitment to advancing financial inclusion across Africa.
Through this collaboration, MTN MoMo users can now top up their wallets directly using debit or credit cards via Mastercard’s Payment Gateway Services (MPGS) — marking a first for the platform. The integration allows customers to fund their MoMo accounts easily and securely from anywhere, offering greater convenience as digital payments continue to reshape Africa’s financial landscape.
Beyond enabling seamless transactions, the partnership brings Mastercard’s advanced fraud prevention and tokenisation technologies to the MoMo ecosystem. Tokenisation replaces sensitive card information — such as card numbers and expiry dates — with unique digital tokens that protect user data while ensuring smooth, secure transactions.
With over 62 million active users across Africa each month, MTN’s MoMo platform has become a major player in the continent’s fintech space. The new features are expected to further strengthen its position in South Africa’s competitive digital finance market, especially among small businesses and consumers seeking secure and accessible financial tools.
MTN’s broader fintech strategy centres on expanding affordable financial services to underserved communities and driving inclusion in the informal economy. The company’s model prioritises low-cost transactions and accessible mobile services, helping more Africans participate confidently in the digital economy.
Recently, MTN also rolled out a rent-to-own smartphone initiative through the MoMo app, allowing customers to purchase 4G or 5G-enabled devices through flexible payment plans ranging from three to twelve months — without credit checks. The move aims to make digital access more inclusive and empower more South Africans with connected devices.
The expanded collaboration with Mastercard builds on these efforts, combining MTN’s deep market reach with Mastercard’s global payment expertise to create a safer, smarter, and more inclusive digital finance ecosystem. Together, both companies are paving the way for a new era of digital convenience, financial trust, and economic participation across Africa.
