The National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA), a newly formed spinoff from Eskom’s transmission division, has officially appointed Monde Bala as its full-time Chief Executive Officer. This follows his interim leadership role, which began in July 2025, during a period of strategic restructuring and leadership transitions within Eskom as part of its broader unbundling process.
Eskom confirmed Monde Bala’s permanent appointment, citing his strong leadership and deep understanding of the transmission business demonstrated during his two-month tenure as interim CEO. The utility emphasized that Bala’s performance made him the ideal candidate to lead NTCSA into its next phase of development.
With over 27 years of experience in the power sector, Monde Bala brings a wealth of institutional knowledge and operational expertise to the role. He is expected to spearhead NTCSA’s strategic initiatives, including attracting private investment and expanding South Africa’s transmission grid in line with the company’s long-term development plan.
Prior to his interim CEO role, Bala served as Eskom’s Group Executive for Distribution since 2019. Throughout his career at Eskom, he has held several senior leadership positions, contributing significantly to the utility’s operations and transformation efforts. Bala holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Bala’s appointment follows the departure of Segomoco Scheppers, Eskom’s former Group Executive for Transmission, who returned to the main Eskom group after being seconded to lead the operationalisation of NTCSA in July 2024. Scheppers, who joined Eskom in 1993 and has extensive experience in transmission, was initially shortlisted for the permanent CEO role. However, at the time, the NTCSA board had not yet finalized its decision on the long-term leadership of the company.
In a related leadership update, Eskom announced that Agnes Mlambo would assume the role of Acting Group Executive for Distribution, effective 1 August 2025, succeeding Bala. The appointment of Bala marks a critical step in NTCSA’s journey as an independent entity, tasked with modernizing South Africa’s transmission infrastructure and supporting the country’s energy transition.
