Microsoft’s AI Tay returns to Twitter, goes on a spam tirade and sleeps again

It was the return of Tay to Twitter this morning but it was only for a short time as the AI chatbot went on a spam tirade.

Microsoft created the chatbot, Tay, to conduct research on conversational understanding. When it was exposed to Twitter, a certain group of users attacked Tay, exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability. It started tweeting wildly inappropriate and reprehensible words and images. It was unable to recognize when it was making offensive or racist statements.

So Microsoft put it to sleep. Tay returned to Twitter again today. Check out its tweets.

We would have embedded the tweets but they are not available. However we were able to get some clips as shown below. Apparently she tweeted “You are too fast, please take a rest” to almost all the Twitter ysers that tried to interact with it.

It seems Microsoft saw this outburst and put it to sleep once again. It is apparent that Tay needs a longer time in a controlled test environment before it is brought back to Twitter.
