Microsoft Teams Unveils Unified App for Work, Personal, and Education on All Platforms

Microsoft Teams has consistently reshaped how we collaborate in both professional and personal settings. Previously, users on Windows 11 had to manage two separate Teams apps—one for work or education and another for personal use. However, a significant update has now been rolled out: the unified Teams app is available on Windows 11, Windows 10, and Mac.

This enhancement brings together work, personal, and education accounts into a single, streamlined application. The app has undergone testing for the majority of the year, and Microsoft is now launching it for Windows and Mac users.

    All Accounts in One Place

Microsoft has faced challenges in supporting both work and personal accounts with Teams. Initially, Windows 11 integrated Teams into the taskbar, but it only supported personal accounts. Last year, Microsoft removed this integration, requiring users to install two separate Teams apps—one for personal use and one for work or school. This led to confusion as users had to ensure they were launching the correct version.

This update simplifies the user experience by allowing all accounts to be accessed from one app. To switch between accounts, users can easily select their profile picture in the upper right corner of Teams. Whether it’s a work, personal, or education account, all can be opened in side-by-side windows, making it easier to manage multiple accounts without the hassle of switching between apps.

Additionally, Microsoft has made it more convenient for users who have multiple Teams accounts. When joining a meeting, users can now choose their preferred account or join as a guest without needing to sign in. This feature is particularly useful for professionals who need to connect with clients or parents joining a school fundraiser discussion.

    Teams for Personal Use

The updated Teams app is not just for work—it’s for everyone. Now, users on Windows 10 and Mac can connect and collaborate with anyone at any time, all for free when using a personal email. Whether it’s scheduling free meetings, inviting participants with a simple join link, or creating a Community for groups like a fantasy football league or a school’s parent organization, Teams offers a shared space with calling, chat, file sharing, and more. This makes it easier for people to stay connected, whether for business, education, or personal reasons.

For enterprise administrators, the new update ensures that any sign-in restrictions set for users are respected, maintaining security and compliance.

    Get Started

The new unified Teams desktop app, supporting all account types, is now available, joining the mobile apps on Android and Apple devices. Existing desktop users will receive the update automatically, or they can download the app directly to experience the new features today.
