Microsoft, together with Snap will incorporate Snapchat Lenses into Microsoft Teams. Over 20 Snapchat Lenses are now integrated into the Microsoft Teams app, featuring a variety of amusing effects such as a cat on your head, a sloth on your shoulder, or virtual sunglasses on your face during video calls.
Teams users can access these lenses without needing to install a separate app or extension, as Microsoft has seamlessly integrated Snapchat’s AR Lenses into the video effects section of the Teams client.
Microsoft utilised Snap’s Camera Kit SDK to introduce these Snapchat Lenses to Teams. The Camera Kit SDK is a set of tools and resources provided by Snap that enables developers to integrate Snapchat’s augmented reality (AR) capabilities and camera effects into third-party applications.
In this case, Microsoft used the SDK to embed more than 20 Snapchat Lenses directly into the video effects section of the Teams client, eliminating the need for users to download separate apps or extensions.
This seamless integration of AR Lenses not only enhances the user experience during video calls but also showcases the versatility and adaptability of Snap’s technology.
While Microsoft also employs Snap’s Camera Kit for its Flip education platform, enabling the addition of Snapchat Lenses to videos, this new Teams feature will be exclusive to Teams for Work users.
Personal and education version users of Teams will not have access to these new Snapchat Lenses. Additionally, users must use the current “classic” version of Teams rather than the “New Teams” preview client, which Microsoft began showcasing last month.
The integration of Snapchat Lenses into Microsoft Teams follows the closure of Snap’s Camera app early this year, which allowed the application of similar filters in Teams and Zoom.
Snap Camera, launched in 2018, was initially intended for Twitch streams, but the surge in video calls during the pandemic led to its increased popularity and viral moments, such as a boss transforming into a potato for an entire Microsoft Teams meeting.
The integration of Snapchat Lenses into Microsoft Teams reflects the continuous evolution of remote work and virtual communication tools. By offering users a touch of fun and creativity during video calls, Microsoft acknowledges the importance of keeping virtual meetings engaging and enjoyable, which can boost morale and productivity.
Although the feature is limited to Teams for Work users, it highlights the potential for further collaborations between tech giants in enhancing user experiences across platforms.
As we continue to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of virtual work and communication, innovations like these demonstrate the commitment of companies such as Microsoft and Snap to enhance the way we connect, collaborate, and maintain a sense of community in the digital realm.
