Microsoft Corp. announced the first non-Nokia Microsoft Lumia 535 and Lumia 535 Dual SIM smartphones running the latest Windows Phone 8.1 operating system and the best part is, it’s going to be an affordable device… It’s more like the Nokia Lumia 520 & 530 but think of it as their bigger, badder senior.
The Lumia 535 looks like a healthy step up, with a bigger screen at 5-inches and a higher resolution, at 960×540, with a better quality, using IPS technology and a Gorilla Glass 3 protective layer. It’s got a 1.2 GHz quad core Snapdragon 200 processor, and the RAM has been doubled to 1GB, thereby eliminating most or all compatibility issues with games. Internal storage is doubled, too, to 8GB with a 1,905mAh battery.
The biggest upgrade, though, is to the cameras. The rear camera retains the 5MP resolution, but it’s now an autofocus unit instead of fixed focus, and it adds an LED flash. The 535 also includes a front-facing camera with the same 5MP resolution.
The 535 also reinstates weird omissions from the 530, such as the missing ambient light sensor which seems to be a little bit awful to me… Just me though but Microsoft claims to have paid special attention to outdoor readability but this isn’t really something you’ll want to brag about but it seems like they’ve done a good job with the device.
However, did you notice all the 5’s?
It’s part of a 5x5x5 proposition from the company, a mission to get the best of Microsoft into the hands of consumers for an affordable price. This is a trend we’ve seen from many companies as of late, one that’s a good thing for low-budget customers looking for a phone that works well: Jo Harlow of Microsoft
Speaking of that affordable price, it’ll be around 110 euros, tax included (which should be around 23,000-24,000 Naira) and the rollout will begin in key markets, that is Europe and Asia but should hopefully get to Africa most likely by this month, following with a worldwide release.
Like so many other Lumias before, the 535’s will both be available in a variety of colours such as bright green, bright orange, white, dark grey, cyan, and black with an interchangeable back cover, and this device will strictly be a 3G device with no LTE capability which is understandable since its target aren’t LTE users.
Altogether, it looks like a strong upgrade to the Lumia 530, one that turns it into the true successor to the cheap and cheerful Lumia 520 that we really wanted.
