Microsoft develops wearable to assist Parkinson’s disease patients: Project Emma

Microsoft has built a wearable to help Parkinson’s disease patients manage the tremors associated with the disease.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. It develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. People with Parkinson’s disease cannot control the tremors. More than 10 million people globally are living with Parkinson’s and there is no cure.

The wearable is Emma, named after the patient that Haiyan Zhang worked with, to assist in creating the device. Haiyan Zhang is the Innovation Director at Microsoft Research.

The video below shows how Project Emma has helped Emma, the patient, regain her writing and drawing ability.

“Anything you can do that would just make my hand do what I want it to do and to sign my name would be an incredible thing.” says Emma.
“How do we even just begin to help her overcome this particular symptom of her tremors, and helping her be able to regain her writing ability, her drawing ability.” asks Haiyan
Watch the video below to see how the development unfolds
