Instagram is reportedly planning to introduce labels that identify posts created or modified using generative AI tools.. This came to light through a screenshot shared by Reverse Engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, which showcased an in-app message explaining the upcoming change.
The message in the screenshot reads, “The creator or Meta said that this content was created or edited with AI.” It further indicates that such content will be labeled as “generated by Meta AI,” aiming to make it easily identifiable for users.
As more and more people encounter AI-generated content online, tech companies like Google are working to help users understand how to identify it. This is important because AI-generated content can be difficult to distinguish from human-created content, and it can have a significant impact on the way we consume information.
Beyond just introducing labels for AI-generated content, Instagram appears to be actively working on several other generative AI features. These efforts come as part of Meta’s broader strategy to integrate AI capabilities across their platforms. While specific details about Meta’s consumer-facing generative AI plans remain undisclosed, CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the development of new products leveraging AI during a recent quarterly earnings call.
While the prospect of AI-driven content creation holds promise, it has also raised concerns among researchers and policymakers. There are worries about the potential misuse of the technology to propagate misinformation or deceive users.
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently launched an investigation targeting OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. The FTC has requested detailed information about the technology and privacy protections employed by OpenAI, specifically looking into measures taken to prevent incidents of the chatbot publishing false and disparaging information about individuals.
