Meta has launched its own standalone AI app, powered by the new Llama 4 model — and it’s a big move toward creating a more personal, smarter AI experience for everyone. Announced at Meta’s LlamaCon event, this new app brings Meta AI out of the shadows of WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger — where it has quietly gained traction — and into its own dedicated platform designed to rival AI tools like ChatGPT.
Unlike other general-purpose AI assistants, Meta’s new offering stands out by using its deep well of user data to provide personalized interactions. Drawing from years of user activity across Meta’s platforms — including your profile, preferences, and friend networks — Meta AI promises more relevant, engaging, and helpful responses tailored specifically to each individual. Currently, this personalized feature set is available in the U.S. and Canada.

One of the headline features of the new Meta AI app is its voice-first interface. Enhanced with full-duplex speech technology, users can now engage in fluid, real-time conversations with their AI assistant. Instead of merely reading out pre-written responses, the AI generates speech dynamically, creating a more natural and human-like dialogue. A visible microphone icon ensures users remain aware of when voice input is active.
This voice interaction is designed for multitaskers and mobile users — allowing users to chat with the AI while doing other things, such as cooking or commuting. Users can also teach the AI personal preferences — like dietary restrictions or travel habits — to improve future recommendations. A setting called “Ready to talk” allows for voice interactions to be turned on by default.
To enhance its social appeal, Meta AI includes a Discover feed. Here, users can explore creative uses of the AI, remix prompts shared by others, and optionally post their own AI interactions — such as asking for a three-emoji description of themselves. While social sharing is completely opt-in, this feed could help amplify emerging generative AI trends.
Meta AI isn’t confined to just phones. The company is integrating the app with its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, allowing seamless transitions between device and app conversations. A desktop version is also being rolled out, featuring advanced image generation tools and a rich document editor capable of producing and analyzing multimedia content.
Underpinning all of this is Meta’s Llama 4 model — its most advanced yet — capable of understanding nuanced context, searching the web for accurate answers, and assisting users in everything from planning trips to analyzing documents. Importantly, Meta reassures users that they maintain control over what information the AI can access or remember.
With its new standalone app, Meta is staking a bold claim in the personal AI space — combining its social DNA, decades of personalization expertise, and expansive platform integration to redefine how users interact with AI every day.
