According to a patent filed by the social media giant in 2020, Meta (previously known as Facebook) is working on a mechanism for users to make 3D video calls to loved ones, in addition to developing the metaverse and other metaverse-related equipment. This is how it might operate.
AI-Enabled 3D Conversations
The patent application, titled “3D Conversations in an Artificial Reality,” reveals Meta‘s plans to develop a new communication technology that will enable people to “record and transmit 3D representations” of themselves in order to make more realistic video chats. It would be distinct from the metaverse concept, which enables users to enter a virtual environment using their digital avatars in order to communicate with other users. Rather than that, this technology seeks to enable users to conduct 3D conversations in the real environment, creating a more realistic video conference experience.
“A 3D communication system can permit 3D talks in an augmented reality environment, giving participants the appearance of being face to face. The 3D conversation system accomplishes this through a pipeline of data processing stages, which may comprise calibrate, capture, tag and filter, compress, decompress, reconstruct, render, and display stages,” according to the patent.
As you can think, this 3D calling technology enables you to communicate with a loved one in three dimensions rather than two. The patent lists a range of devices, including augmented reality glasses and augmented reality/virtual reality headsets, smartphones, and maybe a hologram, that could serve as the principal instruments for such a 3D communication system.
This technology will also feature AI-based filters to change backgrounds, remove AR headsets, and more in order to make the dialogue more lifelike. However, it is important to know that the US Patent and Trademark Office has yet to grant the application, despite the fact that it was filed in 2020. (USPTO).
Furthermore, because the invention is presented in the patent phase, it is possible that it will never see the light of day, similar to many other patents from various corporations.
Despite this, Meta would like to disrupt the communication sector with its latest technology, given the company’s declining daily active users in the market and other concerns surrounding Facebook. As a result, the corporation may rush the creation of such a sophisticated 3D discussion system in order to reclaim its position as the market’s top social company.
