Meta is set to Project Cambria, a high-end VR and mixed-reality headset by September this year, according to The Information. It will also release three other headsets before the end of 2024.
All these were revealed in a report made available to The Information recently. The report stated that Cambria was originally supposed to come out last year but its launch was delayed by supply chain and other pandemic-related issues.
The new aggressive timeline is in line with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of enabling many people to use VR devices to engage in the metaverse. It was recently reported that the social media platform was working on a web version of its social virtual reality Horizon Worlds platform, making it possible for people to try out Horizon Worlds without having to use Quest VR headsets.
Cambria has been described internally as a “laptop for the face” or “Chromebook for the face.”
The assumption is that Project Cambria will have similar specs to that of a Chromebook and will use Meta’s own VR Android-based operating system. It’s also expected to be compatible with web-based tools and services, as well as some Quest apps.
Cambria is said to have high-resolution image quality. This could allow wearers to clearly read text, so they’d be able to send emails or code while wearing the headset. It will also provide wearers with a view of their surroundings using outward-facing cameras. This feature, called full-color passthrough, will allow for mixed-reality experiences.
Cambria should be available for sale at $799 around September 2022.
