Meta has officially launched Edits, a powerful, all-in-one mobile video editing app aimed at giving creators greater control, flexibility, and creative freedom. Available globally on iOS and Android, Edits is positioned as a direct competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut, with several key differences—most notably, no watermark on exported videos and complete access to features at no cost (for now).
Designed with creators in mind, Edits allows users to capture, edit, manage, and publish short-form videos using a suite of tools built specifically for mobile storytelling. The app was developed in close collaboration with content creators, many of whom participated in early testing and feature feedback loops.
“We want to build creative tools that let people express themselves not just on Instagram or Facebook, but anywhere,” Meta noted in its announcement.
A Studio in Your Pocket
Edits offers a streamlined video creation experience, allowing users to:
- Record videos up to 10 minutes long
- Manage multiple video projects and ideas
- Use a frame-accurate timeline for precise clip editing
- Add automatic captions, green screen effects, transitions, and animations
- Turn photos into animated content using AI
- Browse trending audio for inspiration and seamless sound integration
What sets Edits apart from competitors like CapCut is its completely free editing environment, with plans for future paid features still in the works. Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently hinted that some premium features could be introduced down the line.

Watermark-Free, Platform-Free
Another standout feature is that Edits allows creators to export content without a watermark, unlike CapCut’s free version. Users can share directly to Instagram and Facebook, or export for publishing on any platform, including TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
Smart Insights and Upcoming Features
The app also includes data-driven insights—like skip rate and engagement trends—that help creators fine-tune their content for better reach and performance.
Meta is already working on several new features based on early feedback:
- Keyframes: Adjust the position, size, or timing of clips with pinpoint accuracy
- Modify: Use AI to instantly change the visual feel of a video
- Collaboration tools: Share drafts for peer or brand feedback
- Expanded creative assets including fonts, filters, music, and voice effects
The Bigger Picture
Meta’s timing is strategic. The release follows regulatory uncertainty around TikTok and CapCut in the U.S., positioning Edits as a powerful alternative if ByteDance platforms face further restrictions.
By placing creator needs at the core and eliminating common limitations, Edits could emerge as the go-to mobile editor for the next generation of storytellers—on and beyond Meta’s platforms.
