Meta has finally launched direct messaging (DM) with its most recent worldwide update, giving Instagram Threads users the much-awaited option to communicate privately on the text-focused site.
The new DM feature, now available to users aged 18 and over across Android, iOS, and the web, marks a major milestone for Threads. Since its launch, the app has been viewed as Meta’s answer to X (formerly Twitter), but until now, it lacked a key component of any modern social platform: private messaging.
Upcoming Features to Watch For
Threads users may now initiate one-on-one conversations with mutual followers or with Instagram users who follow them back, thanks to the addition of direct messages. Just tap the envelope icon at the bottom of the Threads app to start a conversation. To create a new message, go to your inbox and click the pencil icon in the upper-right corner.
Although this first version of DMs is fairly limited—supporting only individual conversations—Meta has made it clear that this is just the beginning. Apparently the company plans to expand and refine the feature based on user feedback. It’s worth noting that end-to-end encryption is not yet supported, though Meta assures users that existing privacy and safety measures remain in place.
For now, the direct messaging on Instagram Threads offers a streamlined, user-friendly experience that mirrors the familiar feel of Instagram’s inbox. However, there’s much more on the horizon.
What’s Coming Next?
Meta is now going beyond basic messaging. Future improvements will include a discrete message request folder, similar to what users now see on X, and tools to limit who can send you messages—even non-followers.
Inbox filters and group chats are also being developed to help users better manage their messages and organize conversations. With these improvements, Threads will become more useful as a platform for continuous, meaningful discussions, in addition to being more participatory.
Introducing The “Highlighter” Tool
Meta has also launched a new content discovery tool called “Highlighter.” This program selects exceptional content and novel viewpoints with the goal of igniting more in-depth conversations on the site. Highlighter will first show up in the “For You” feed before gradually moving to other sections of the app.
These features show how independent Threads is becoming from Instagram. The app is gradually establishing its own identity, even if it initially relied heavily on Instagram’s infrastructure, particularly for messaging and login. Meta is positioning Instagram Threads as a stand-alone substitute for X and other text-based platforms like Bluesky by incorporating features like direct messaging and discovery tools such as Highlighter.
With the addition of DMs, Threads feels more competitive and comprehensive. It’s becoming a solid choice for those looking for a more serene, tidy environment for both private and public discussions. It is also evident that Meta is dedicated to transforming Threads into a social media platform that does more than simply communicate—it can actually connect—with more changes on the horizon.
