Facebook is rolling out Messenger Lite in 132 additional countries including Nigeria, Germany, Colombia, Italy, Vietnam, Algeria, Morocco, Peru, Turkey, Japan, Taiwan and the Netherlands.
This announcement was made by David Marcus, head of Messenger on his Facebook page.
According to him, “Making sure that everyone can have a great experience with Messenger irrespective of the age of their smartphone is very important to us.”
“So if you have an older phone that doesn’t have a lot of memory, or has limited processing power, and you want the benefit of messaging quickly with any of the 1.2+ billion people using Messenger every month, give Lite a try!”
(Though David said 150 countries in his announcement, Techcrunch commented that this was not correct. It is actually 132 countries)
Messenger Lite is a slimmed down version of Messenger that offers the core features of Messenger for markets with slower than average internet speeds and a prevalence of basic Android smartphones. With Messenger Lite, people are able to quickly and easily send text, photos and links to anyone using Messenger or Messenger Lite.
Facebook launched the Messenger Lite app for Android last October, but it was available only in Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela
