Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) is set to significantly boost the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in the country by partnering with Tibco’s Chargify to install 127 new EV charging stations. The move is part of Mercedes-Benz’s sustainability strategy and aims to support the growing demand for EVs in South Africa.
In a joint effort, Mercedes-Benz and Chargify plan to invest a total of R40 million in two phases. The first phase, with a contribution of R15 million from Mercedes, will see the installation of 67 Mercedes-Benz EQ charging stations across South Africa by Q1 2024. The second phase, with an additional R25 million from Mercedes, will add the remaining 60 stations in strategic locations.
The charging stations will feature a mix of AC and fast-charging DC options and will be strategically placed along main routes, between metropolitan areas, airports, shopping malls, restaurant hubs, private hospitals, and residential estates. This expansive network aims to provide current EV owners with a reliable charging infrastructure while encouraging others to make the switch to electric vehicles.
South Africa has witnessed a remarkable 127% growth in EV sales in 2022, according to a DriveElectric study, positioning it as a leader in the African continent. Mercedes-Benz, which already sells various EV models in the country, intends to play a pivotal role in further accelerating the adoption of electric mobility.
Notable locations that already feature EQ-branded charging stations include BT Ngebs Mall, Mayfair Hotel, Courtyard Sandton, Champagne Castle, Da Vinci Hotel, Highwaymans Garage, Silvermist Wine Estate, and Woodhill Estate. The companies are actively working towards building the most extensive EV public charging network in South Africa.
To promote EV usage, Mercedes-Benz EQ customers will enjoy a 10% discount on recharges at the new stations. The charging infrastructure will also be open to other users, including those utilising the GridCars ActiveCharge network, South Africa’s largest EV charging network operator.
This initiative aligns with Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s commitment to Enterprise and Supplier Development, aiming to create sustainable jobs and contribute to the country’s transformation.
