Mastarcard just unveiled its new logo which happened to be its first redesign in 20 years. According to the company, they needed a design which would be a reflection of the modern day with plans to grow with the digital payment sphere.
Though the logo doesn’t exactly have different look from its previous desfib but if you’re familiar with the previous logo and look closely, you’ll notice the biggest change here is the comb effect where the circles meet has been gotten rid of and the “MasterCard,” font with its dated look has been changed too and moved below the logo, with a new font.
The company enlisted renowned design firm Pentagram to create its new identity through it’s logo. “Everything has changed in the past 20 years,” said Michael Bierut, the Pentagram partner who oversaw the project. “There was a lot of screw tightening and design tinkering happening [with the logo] in the first 30 years of the company. Then they almost got frozen in 1996. If you have a MasterCard in your wallet, that’s the logo you see … The trick then is, how do we leverage 50 years of equity?”
The company’s big focus with the redesign was MasterPass, MasterCard’s new digital payment system. The logo had to look good online, and so its new minimalist shape was welcomed.
