It’ll soon be time for the tech world to once again turn its attention to Mountain View. The upcoming Google I/O developer conference is set to begin precisely two months from now on May 14th. Just as they did last year, Google will conduct the 2024 I/O keynote with a limited live audience, while broadcasting it online to permit virtual attendance.
The primary focus of this year’s I/O event is likely to be Artificial Intelligence (AI), given that Google recently unveiled its latest flagship AI model, Gemini, along with its smaller version, Gemma.
Noteworthy controversies to address during the event include the image generator of the Gemini bot, which sparked a debate due to the bot’s inability to produce diverse images properly, an issue described as “completely unacceptable” by Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO.
This controversy, coupled with the misstated facts during the launch of Google’s Bard last year, means Google will need to articulate why its AI technology is superior to competitors such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others, despite these setbacks.
Besides, attendees and viewers can expect announcements on new features to be incorporated in Android 15, updates to other Google services like Gmail and Google Photos, and more.
There’s also speculation about the launch of a new Pixel 8A smartphone at the I/O event, a successor to the midrange 7A unveiled at last year’s event. If this is to be, the Pixel 8A could possibly inherit some AI capabilities from the Pixel 8 model, but at a more affordable price.
