Mailbox which has been described as the best email app on the Iphone has come to Android and PC. Mailbox is a free email management application for iOS and Android developed by Orchestra, Inc. The application received coverage on numerous technology blogs for its ease-of-use and innovative features, including swipe-based email sorting and filtering.
Mailbox was added to the iOS App store on Thursday, February 7, 2013; it became the second most downloaded free app in the App Store that day. As of April 2013, Mailbox is available to users without wait-listing. Dropbox spent $100m to acquire it last year. Dropbox has confirmed both Android and desktop versions of its awesome iPhone app. The former was available in Google’s Play store from yesterday for free, while the desktop Mailbox client is currently a closed beta.
The service the app provides is limited to Gmail and iCloud. When setting up the app with Gmail you must enter your Gmail account information to use the app. The app uses its own server to repeatedly query Gmail about the contents of your inbox using Google’s API. It then uses its server to push information to the device, as a POP3 email provider would, without the user actively fetching the email. Since December 17, 2013, Mailbox added support for Yahoo, iCloud, me.com, and mac.com email addresses.
As of December 20th, 2013, Yahoo! Mail has been pulled and the Mailbox team has reached out to the Yahoo! team with goals of restoring the service. Mailbox now only supports Gmail and iCloud.
