A made in China computer named Sunway Taihu Light has been declared the world’s fastest computer according to a report on the Top500 list of Supercomputers released at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) being held in Frankfurt, Germany.
With the Supercomputer’s technology locally sourced, the Sunway Taihu Light takes the top spot from another Chinese made computer Tianhe-2. The current record holder can perform 93 quadrillion calculations per second and it is roughly five times more powerful than the fastest system from the United States which is now ranked third globally.
Sunway Taihu Light is presently running at the National Supercomputing Center in the city of Wuxi, a manufacturing and technology hub, west of Shanghai, China. The system will perform research and engineering work, including climate, weather and earth systems modeling, life science research, advanced manufacturing, and data analytics.
Speaking on the milestone, Prof. Guangwen Yang, Director of the National Supercomputing Center, said, “As the first number one system of China that is completely based on homegrown processors, the Sunway TaihuLight system demonstrates the significant progress that China has made in the domain of designing and manufacturing large-scale computation systems.”
This news further endorse and enhance China’s technology advancement and at the same time highlights the waning influence of United States technology.
