MacKenzie Bezos joins Warren Buffett, Bill and Melinda Gates in signing the “Giving Pledge”

Mackenzie Bezos, former wife of Jeff Bezos, has signed off half of her $36 billion fortune to charity, joining Warren Buffet, Bill and Melinda Gates in “The Giving Pledge”

The Giving Pledge is a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to giving back. It is an effort to help address society’s most pressing problems by inviting the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to commit to giving more than half of their wealth to philanthropy or charitable causes either during their lifetime or in their will.

According to Mackenzie Bezos in a statement dated last week Saturday; “In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share. My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care.”

MacKenzie Bezos became the world’s third-richest woman, acquiring a 4% stake in Amazon worth about $36 billion when she and Jeff Bezos announced their divorce settlement on April 4.

Jeff Bezos supported his ex-wife’s action saying  “MacKenzie is going to be amazing and thoughtful and effective at philanthropy, and I’m proud of her,” he said on Twitter. “Her letter is so beautiful. Go get ‘em MacKenzie.”

However it is important to note that Jeff Bezos has not signed “The Giving Pledge”.

As of 2019, there are 209 pledgers including Mo Ibrahim, Strive and Tsitsi Masiyiwa and Patrice and Precious Motsepe from Africa.
