East Africa is on the cusp of a connectivity transformation with the launch of LINX Nairobi, a new Internet Exchange Point (IXP) set up within Kenya’s bustling capital. This strategic initiative is poised to significantly boost the region’s digital landscape and connectivity.
As a leader in technology innovation within Africa, Kenya has been experiencing a robust digital revolution, boasting an impressive annual growth rate of 10.8% since 2016. This surge is largely attributed to the country’s strategic geographic positioning, which enables it to provide comprehensive fibre connectivity not just locally, but across East Africa, with connections extending to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia via a sophisticated submarine cable network.
LINX (London Internet Exchange), established in 1994, is spearheading the LINX Nairobi project, bringing its globally recognized expertise to strengthen Kenya’s already burgeoning digital ecosystem. The IXP’s multi-site setup spans across three prime data centre locations, namely IXAfrica, Africa Data Centres NBO1, and iColo NBO1, ensuring high redundancy and secure internet traffic management for the region.
Nurani Nimpuno, the Head of Global Engagement at LINX, expressed excitement and pride in leading the LINX Nairobi project. Drawing parallels with Kenya’s trailblazing in digital finance through platforms like M-PESA, Nimpuno anticipates LINX Nairobi to similarly propel the country’s digital infrastructure forward, enhancing the already vibrant tech ecosystem.
LINX Nairobi is designed to be a collaborative effort, with key local stakeholders, data centre partners, ISPs, and content providers working in tandem to support the interconnection hub. This synergy aims to leverage the respective strengths of each partner, fostering a cohesive and successful digital environment.
One of the significant advantages of LINX Nairobi is the capability for networks within these data centres to peer their traffic. This peering process is vital for improving network control, cost-effectiveness, and reducing latency, thereby optimizing digital communications within the region.
In an era where digital service advancements are a governmental priority, as seen with projects like the Kenya Digital Superhighway, LINX Nairobi’s timing is impeccable. It aligns with the nation’s focus on enhancing fibre network coverage and establishing ‘smart hubs’ in rural regions.
