Some like her, some hate her. But truth be told, you cannot talk about blogging in Nigeria without mentioning Linda Ikeji. And she has been blogging for almost ten years now (will be 10 in November) and still making money from it. It is estimated that she makes about N50 million every month.
One true test of a good company is its longevity. She’s been over the five year hump and still waxing stronger. She has made some conventional blogs envious and still wondering how she has been able to survive the hustle and bustle. Some wish she would go the way of Nick Denton and Gawker media that went bankrupt due to a lawsuit brought upon by Hulk Hogan for publishing his indiscretions. But there have been people who have tried and have been trying to replicate her success by coming up with replica blogs.
Whatever you think, she has been successful….
Just yesterday on her blog, she shared her plans for expansion. She said she was going into
- TV (Linda Ikeji TV),
- Online Radio (Linda Ikeji Radio),
- Music (Linda Ikeji Music), And
- LIS (still wondering what this is)
Interesting choice for expansion. Some would have thought she would move onto another more fanciful blogging platform but she didn’t say anything about moving on from the Blogger platform she started with. It even took her a long time to change her domain name.
Should she have expanded vertically into different blogs like fashion, music, e.t.c? Well she didn’t. Should she have invited some top shot Management Consulting firm to craft a mission, vision and expansion strategy for her. She definitely can afford it. I don’t know if she did.
Way to go, girl…One day you might a case study in Lagos Business School or even Harvard Business School.
