Just like the ban of commercial bike operators in Lagos Nigeria, Uganda has banned the operations of commercial bike operators, otherwise known as boda bodas on major commercial roads.
In May, all Boda Boda riders were enjoined to register either under a ride-hailing startup or with the Ugandan authorities as part of a COVID-19 control strategy.
The Kampala Capital City Authority Affairs (KCCA) then issued a new directive to resume operations on Monday, 27th of July 2020. However, in a sudden twist, the directive includes a “Boda Boda -Free Zone” clause which prohibits commercial riders from accessing major city routes.
This means that all 200,000+ commercial bike operators including SafeBoda, UberBoda and Taxify Boda in the high traffic value Kampala Metropolitan Area will be relegated to the suburbs.
The Boda Boda – Free Zone passes through:
Wampewo Roundabout – Jinja Road/Kitgum House Junction -Access Road – Mukwano Road/Clock Tower – Kafumbe Musaka Road – Kisenyi Road – Mackay Road – Kyaggwe Rpad – Watoto Church – Bombo Road – Wandegeya – Hajj Musa Kasule Road – Mulago Roundabout – Kamwokya Junction – Sturrock Road – Prince Charles Drive – Lugogo Bypass – Jinja Rpad – Wampewo Roundabout.
If this directive remains, the bike-hailing companies would be forced to transit to delivery or logistics companies as their counterparts did when the same thing happened in Lagos
