Fingerprint scanners were definitely a major breakthrough when we first got introduced to them on our mobile devices.
The strain of typing through a combination of symbols or even the simplest word combinations was taken away with just a swipe.
Apple stepped it up a notch with the introduction of the Touch ID that made secure payments even more seamless.
There is no debating the usefulness of this technology from aiding on the go selfies to whatever ease that their inclusion in phone designs may have brought you. However, there has been a lot of conversations around where the fingerprint scanner ought to be located.
Where should it be positioned?
IS IT ON THE HOME BUTTON?
Some argue that the presence of the sensor in this position reduces the screen size that one enjoys. Personally, I do not think this is the best location for a fingerprint scanner but soon as one gets used to the device it feels less like a chore. Also, it is definitely more secure than drawing patterns.
THE SIDE OF THE PHONE?
Or this Sony phone that sees the scanner positioned comfortably at the side of the phone. I do think this position is one of the most thoughtful. It is less strenuous as it comes with the natural handling of the phone.
AT THE BACK OF THE DEVICE?
Tecno, like many Chinese brands are known for making affordable phones with high spec features and this positioning of the fingerprint scanner at the back of the phone is as comfortable as itgets. It is easily reached using the index finger.
OFF CENTER BESIDE THE CAMERA AT THE BACK OF THE DEVICE?
In my opinion, this is one of the most disappointing locations but something has to give for Samsung’s bezel-less screen on its latest Galaxy flagship phone series. Samsung was rumored to be working with Synaptic in order to introduce a never before used inbuilt fingerprint scanner technology. The rumours were really thick but that didn’t come to be. The Samsung S8 and Note 8 have their fingerprint scanners in one of the most awkward positions – off center at the back of the device.I do think this position would require a lot of gettingused to.
INBUILT ?
The unusual suspect that beat the two big guns to the inbuilt fingerprint scanner is Vivo. This announcement was made at the recently concluded CES.
It is a much-needed breakthrough and phone manufacturers do not have to compromise on the design of their devices. It would seem that Apple isn’t in a rush seeing as it introduced its Face ID that may be more secure given the average sensor available in the market.
DOES IT REALLY MATTER IF IT IS LOCATED ON THE HEAD, TAIL OR SIDE?
I asked around if the idea of an inbuilt scanner is reason enough to desire a phone and the popular answer I got is No. people are more focused on fast processors and cameras with high resolutions. The in built fingerprint scanner is quite complex and it is a laudable achievement.
