The Lagos State of government, through one of its parastatal – Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC), has awarded a grant of 5million Naira to Shifatech for the furtherance of their work in the health sector.

Shifatech, makers of ShiVent, is a COVID-response company established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to address the shortage supply of ventilators which is critical to supporting patients with respiratory distress.

ShiVent is a non-electric, non-invasive ventilator that operates on the principles of bubble CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure).

The design of the ShiVent focuses on 2 key elements – a venturi mixer to enable a blend of oxygen and air, thus supporting the inhalation process and a Bubbler (Bottle + Specialised Cap) which is designed to create, sustain and regulate back pressure in the patient exhalation process.

ShiVent was developed by a Medical Doctor; Dr Yusuf Shittu and 4 PhD researchers from Loughborough University; Ricardo O’ Nascimento, Pawel Nycz, Gaurav Nanajkar and Yusuf Oladipupo B. for use by Medical personnels in Medical facilities in emerging economies with low resource set ups.

Shifatech has also been shortlisted for Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation for its work with the ShiVent
