Kwesé iflix which recently landed the award for Best Innovation in Digital Entertainment at AfricaCom 2018 in a bid to grow original African Content has unveiled a slate of original programming from Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria.
Comprising local scripted drama, raw docu-series, pan-regional alternative news and live coverage, the news follows the launch of the first Kwesé iflix original series from Kenya, Nganya.
A thirteen-part drama, produced by Kenya’s Assignments Studios, Nganya is a gritty Swahili drama centred on the matatu business in Nairobi’s Eastlands. In a criminal underworld teeming with shady characters, a hapless matatu team soon find themselves tangled in a web of corruption and deceit.
Nganya will be followed in December by the release of Kwese iflix’ original Tanzanian telenovela Nyavu, described as “a captivating love story filled with drama, deceit and traditions”. In Nigeria, Kwesé iflix will also be launching what it calls an innovative docu-series early next year.
“Our new original content offering underlines Kwesé iflix’s ambition to lead an entertainment revolution in the markets we serve in Africa,” said Mayur Patel, CEO, Kwesé iflix.
“Deeply relevant, action-packed and with local antagonists, our original slate pushes the limits. We are thrilled to work with local top-tier industry players to offer our users some of the region’s top entertainment franchises. We want to grow and establish Kwesé iflix as the new home for the region’s most talented producers and actors.”
Kwesé iflix has additionally greenlit a number of projects which underpin the company’s commitment to localization and homegrown talent, with the aim to create impactful, locally relevant content that has a familiar appeal, whilst lifting the bar on local free-to-air TV output.
It is this commitment to innovation that recently landed Kwesé iflix the award for Best Innovation in Digital Entertainment at AfricaCom 2018.
Kwesé iflix is currently available in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with operations planned for Rwanda, Botswana, Lesotho and Malawi.
