    The disruptive potentials of KongaPay

    0
By Jesse Oguntimehin on April 2, 2015 Ecommerce, Exclusive, Jumia, News, Review, Startups, Technology in Africa

In March, Innovation Village reported ecommerce giant, Konga, announced new features which included more product variety, flexible deliver charges and a new secure payment method which is expected to be called KongaPay. More information about KongaPay revealed it can be used even if customers do not have Internet banking.

Konga has already implemented GTPay, a payment method that Guarantee Trust Bank Plc’s internet Banking customers can use when they select to pay using GTBank at checkout. The way this works is that, GTBank customers who choose this mode of payment are directed to GTBank Internet banking platform within Konga and they are prompted to enter their details with the amount of goods being filled already. The bank-customer-turned-Konga-shopper is then asked to enter bank token and boom, transaction is completed!

But KongaPay is totally different from GTPay, as TechCabal is reporting as the service does not require internet banking. The service is based on an integration involving Konga.com and banks. Customers of Nigerian banks that have already partnered with Konga will be able to link their Konga account to their bank account. Once this is done, customer will be able to checkout using KongaPay using a one time password.

In March, Konga announced it was seeking to recruit a manager KongaPay. The person will build KongaPay, recruit support staffs and run all its operations. This means Konga is really serious about its new venture.

When KongaPay grows, with customers of KongaPay not needing Internet banking or a card, Interswitch is going to take a hit. Interswitch has Konga and Jumia as customers who are contributing immensely to the growth of its business.

It will be interesting to see this product launched and find out how many online customers will embrace it. Screen Shot 2015-04-02 at 10.48.06

At the moment, Konga offers Pay on Delivery, GTPay and payment option using ATM/Debit card (that is routed through Interswitch). I predict that if KongaPay functions as effortlessly as PayPal – and it offers a means for customers to get refunds with ease, in addition to an excellent customer service, more people will embrace it and will be paying for goods on Konga using KongaPay.
