It is interesting that many professional drivers and car owners do not know that tyres expire. Some car owners will not change their tyres except they are worn out or burst. They do not even check the dates when buying new tyres. If they knew, they would not buy tryes that would expire in a month’s time.
Yes, tyres expire. They have a four (4) life span and they should be changed thereafter. The date of manufacture is usually written on a tyre. If a tyre does not have a date of manufacture, please do not buy it.
The date of manufacture, a four digit number, is represented by the week and year of manufacture. The first two digits represent the week while the last digit represents the year.
For example, *0304* means the tyre was manufactured on the 3rd week in the year 2004. Usually, the four digits stand alone, not added to any alphabet. Some manufacturers place the asterics sign (*) before and after the four digits , while others simply encircle it.
This means that since the year of manufacture in the example above is *0304*, the tyre will expire on the 3rd week of the year 2004; i.e. after 4 years.
Now that you know, go and check your car tyres to ensure that they have not expired and watch out when you buy new tyres.
